One of the largest organs in the body, the liver is an incredibly complex system — it filters our harmful substances, creates bile acid to help with digestion, stores sugar for energy, and has the ability to regenerate cells and tissue in ways that no other body part can. Due to the complexity of the liver, Cancer Center at Illinois researchers have been exploring the organ to create a full understanding of liver cells and the intricate mechanisms that occur in these cells, and how that may contribute to diseases such as cancer.
In addition to their expertise in liver function, CCIL scientists are using the information gained from their studies to collaborate and explore more effective treatments and therapies for cancer patients.
