Immunotherapy

According to the National Cancer Institute, immunotherapy is “a type of therapy that uses substances to stimulate or suppress the immune system to help the body fight cancer, infection, and other diseases.” Immunotherapy is a promising, but emerging, area in cancer treatment. Since the treatments encourage stimulation of the immune system, scientists are still investigating and uncovering how to reduce, manage, or eliminate side effects. Additionally, since immunotherapy techniques are new compared with traditional radiation and chemotherapeutics, individual response to treatment varies.

As Cancer Center at Illinois researchers continue to study this therapy type, their new discoveries and thorough understanding of immunotherapy may lead to more compassionate care and improved treatment outcomes.
