Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center Shared Resource

A state-of-the-art hybrid service and research facility with highly trained staff and modern instrumentation for all molecular aspects of research at the Cancer Center at Illinois, the Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center (CBC) has served as a premier biological research resource — locally, nationally, and internationally — for more than 40 years. A cutting-edge hybrid service and research facility, the CBC operates six core laboratories across the Illinois campus, staffed by highly trained specialists and equipped to support genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, bioinformatics, flow cytometry, and spatial transcriptomics.

A graduate student works in a laboratory at the Institute for Genomic Biology.

CBC also addresses cancer-focused research directions and priority workflows for Cancer Center at Illinois members. CBC’s 14,380 sq. ft. of laboratory space is distributed across campus within a five-minute walk, promoting efficient management and collaboration.

Initiating a Project

Prior to project initiation, a meeting is required with HPCBio (and potentially other CBC) staff to discuss each project. If mutually agreed that the CBC can support the project, we will deliver a quote outlining the approach, timeline, and costs for the agreed service(s). As this is cutting-edge science, we cannot guarantee success. In all cases, the user will be billed for the cost and labor for the CBC effort per our fee structure. All services are provided on a best-effort basis and must be paid for regardless of success or failure unless stated otherwise. After the quote is accepted, the user will complete and return a project intake form. All sample data are assumed to have no privacy constraints (under possible HIPAA or CUI constraints) unless otherwise agreed upon in advance. The user must diligently and transparently follow all University of Illinois data management policies, including data privacy and retention of a copy of their original (raw) data.

Project Pricing

All University of Illinois and off-campus projects cost $103 per hour. Facility users outside Illinois or private institutions within Illinois are subject to a 30.8% indirect cost rate (as of March 2026). State of Illinois institutions are subject to a 30.8% indirect cost rate for federally funded projects and a 20% indirect cost rate for non-federally funded projects. Costs are based on estimates that encompass both this consulting rate and computational costs from processing and storing data. In most cases, projects require setup time to download data and update databases and software. CBC strives to update our prices on a regular (yearly) basis, but reserves the right to change service prices at any time.

Note: Off-campus projects require a technical testing agreement.

Acknowledgment of Work

All scientific work performed by the Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center is required to be acknowledged in scholarly publications, posters, and presentations. Proper recognition allows CBC staff to measure the impact of their work and supports initiatives in obtaining sponsored funding. In addition, CBC personnel who make a substantial intellectual or experimental contribution are deserving of further recognition as co-authors.
